Goan delegates learn 'business culture' in Canada

FIVE DELEGATES from Goa were imparted training in Canadian business culture for two months under a Indo-Canadian enterprise exchange programme sponsored by the sub-committee of International Goan Organisation, University of Toronto and Xerox Canada.

The programme provided intensive customized training, insights into Canadian business culture given by stockbrokers, banks, stock exchange, government departments and others.

Speaking to reporters Law Minister Luizinho Faleiro stated that a total of 86 people were mobilized to assist in this pilot project which was launched on 16 November last year.

Each delegate was asked to focus on one project they would like to implement on their return to Goa. Using the strategic management process, they had to make a presentation on their respective business plan to the board in addition to providing a report, he said.

The minister for Law and Judiciary Luizinho Faleiro assisted the IGO in the selection of the delegates which had to be completed within a very short time because the sponsorship applied to 1993 only.

The tour was sponsored by the International Goans Organisation (IGO) and the participants were Mr. Salim Kazi, Ms. Norma Collaco, Mr. Allwyn D'Costa, Mr. Stanley Dias and Mr. Bosco Rodrigues. The selection was made with the help of the Law Minister, Mr. Luisinho Faleiro.

The delegation members, who are bubbling with enthusiasm despite having had to undergo training under sub-zero temperature conditions, said that the visit organized under the Indo-Canadian Enterprise Exchange Programme with the help of the university of Toronto and Xerox Canada, was an eye-opener. "In fact, the experience about the business systems in Canada will help me to set up my venture more effectively, Mr. D'Costa told newsmen.

Ms. Cellie Gonsalves, who initiated, directed and implemented the programme has gone on record saying that the University of Toronto and Xerox Canada had provided intensive customized training, insights into Canadian business culture were given by stockbrokers, banks, Stock Exchange and Government departments.

The tour also took the delegates to Montreal, the bilingual city, Ottawa, the Capital city, the Niagara Falls and the Toronto Maple Leafs Ice Hockey team in action. There were dances, parties and nostalgic celebrations of the Navelim feast in Canada.

Ms Zulema de Souza, President of the IGO sub-committee responsible for organising academic and technical training ha said that "the idea is that our delegates would return to Goa with an initial plan and refine it on their return to Goa prior to implementation. We believe they will be successful and positively contribute to the Goan economy."

The delegates had only to pay the air fare and the remaining expenditure of about $70,000 was borne by the IGO.

Goans In Canada For Training

Delegates visiting Niagara Falls

Five Goans who had left for Canada as a part of the Indo-Canadian enterprise exchange organized by International Goan organization are mid-way through their training programme.

A hectic schedule during the week days with the week end totally dedicated to leisure activities and sightseeing tours besides a whole week off for Christmas has bee arranged for the delegates.

In the month of November the five delegates were trained in stock market and how it works with visits to the Toronto Stock Exchange for a first had experience.

The leisure activities include a visit to the Niagara Falls and Christmas dances amongst a host of other programmes to help the Goan youth to interact with their counterparts from Canada.

Incidentally some of the candidates' English was found to be poor and this was cited as another reason for denying visas. However the IGO managed to argue the case and all five delegates were granted visas to visit Canada.

The persons who are participating in this exchange programe are Bosco Rodrigues from Cavelossim, Salimuddin Bashir Ishaq Kazi from EDC, Allwyn D'Costa who is an agriculturist, Stanley Dias who is a real estate developer and Ms. Maryanne Collasco who was working with Datapro Information Technology.
